Health calculator BMI – check your weight

Do you want to know how much weight should be at a certain height? This can be done very quickly and easily using the online calculator below. The calculations are based on the calculation of the Body Mass Index (BMI). If the BMI is from 18.5 to 24.99, then this is the norm.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body mass index is an indicator of the ratio of weight and height of a person. This parameter helps to determine deviations from normal body weight in one direction or another. Being overweight is dangerous for human health because it often leads to heart disease. The online body mass index calculator allows you to quickly and accurately find out how your weight indicator is normal. To calculate the body mass index, you must select your height and weight in the service presented.

Body mass index for women is considered normal if the indicator is in the range from 20 to 22. For men, this indicator should be from 23 to 25. Statistics show that people who have this indicator remains between 18-22 live on average longer than those who have weight problems.

If the BMI exceeds 25, then this is a signal that you need to change your lifestyle. It is important to note that the formula used to calculate body mass index can overestimate the rate of obesity for athletic people since the calculations do not take into account muscle mass.

Body mass index has become especially relevant in Western countries, where the problem of obesity has become quite acute. At the very beginning, the calculation of IMT was developed for sociological research, so it is not entirely correct to make a medical diagnosis using these calculations.

However, the availability and ease of calculation made this calculator very popular among the population. If the index exceeds the number 30, then this is very likely to indicate obesity.
You need to understand that the body mass index is not suitable for making a diagnosis, but it can help as a control in the process of testing a new fitness program or diet.

The BMI calculator will determine the reference point and allow you to track changes in body weight.

Category BMI
Very severely underweight < 15
Severely underweight 15 – 16
Underweight 16 – 18.5
Normal (healthy weight) 18.5 – 25
Overweight 25 – 30
Obese Class I (Moderately obese) 30 – 35
Obese Class II (Severely obese) 35 – 40
Obese Class III (Very severely obese) 40 – 45
Obese Class IV (Morbidly obese) 45 – 50
Obese Class V (Super obese) 50 – 60
Obese Class VI (Hyper obese) > 60

Body Mass Index Limitations

The BMI calculation formula has its limitations – it is suitable only for adult men and women and is not suitable for athletes and the elderly. Calculators of the percentage of fat and figure (the ratio of waist to height) are considered more accurate.

Body Mass Index Formulas

Back in the 19th century, they thought about assessing the excess weight to reduce the risks of diseases. The method of calculating body mass index is very simple, it appeared in 1869, even before the advent of calculators. But according to statistics, this calculation is not the most accurate – people of short stature, as a result, get a lower index than in reality, and people of high stature get a higher one. Oxford University has developed a refined formula for determining body mass index.

bmi formula

The formula does not take into account the gender and age of a person, although the BMI of men is higher than the BMI of women, and the BMI is higher in middle-aged people, and in children and the elderly, this indicator is lower. The author of this formula is the Belgian scientist Adolf Quetelet. True, he was not a physiologist, but a mathematician. Therefore, doctors have several complaints about his formula:

  • it does not take into account the ratio of muscle and fat mass, so BMI will not be able to adequately reflect the state of health of a bodybuilder engaged in building muscle potential: if he calculates the body mass index according to the Ketle formula, and according to the results he will be in the company of loose fat men;
  • these calculations are not suitable for older people: for 60-70-year-old pensioners, somewhat overweight is not considered hazardous to health, so the BMI range for them can be extended from 22 to 26.

If you are not an elderly person or a bodybuilder, then the Quetelet formula will completely cope with the assessment of the balance of your parameters. The magnitude of the error, in this case, does not hurt to understand whether you are normal or not.

It should be borne in mind that the idea of the medical community about the norm of BMI may change over time. So it was already on the threshold of the third millennium when the BMI recommended by doctors dropped from 27.8 to 25. But Israeli scientists proved that a body mass index of 25-27 is optimal for men: with this index, they have the longest life expectancy.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated using the following formula: multiply height in meters by your height in meters and then divide body weight in kilograms by the resulting multiplication result. So, for example, for a height of 1.65 (in meters) and a weight of 58 (in kilograms), BMI is 21.3
(BMI = first increase the growth of 1.65 by the growth of 1.65, and then divide the weight of 58 by the resulting multiplication result). If the result of the calculation is in the range 18.5 – 24.99, then this is the norm.
